Q: What sports do you practise?
Lotte: Growing up, I was involved in athletics and competitive swimming in Belgium. Now, my main focus is on triathlon and trail running.
Q: When did you begin training intensively in these sports?
Lotte: I started training intensively when I was 21 years old.
Q: Can you describe your typical weekly training schedule?
Lotte: I train daily, alternating between two sports per day, ensuring no more than two days pass between practising each sport. Swimming sessions last 1.5 hours, running sessions are between 1-2 hours, and cycling is about 2 hours.
Q: Do you use any supplements to support your training?
Lotte: I use supplements based on my training needs. For example, I'm sponsored by 4gold and 6D. I always take supplements when cycling and occasionally when running, but I don't use them for swimming.
Q: Do you work with a sports coach?
Lotte: Yes, I have a coach who designs my training schedule.
Q: Can you tell us about some of your sports achievements?
Lotte:Some of my accomplishments include completing the Marathon des Sables, participating in the 700 km Crocodile Trophy, and climbing Mont Ventoux on a unicycle. I've also finished La Cannibale, a demanding 173 km cycling race with six mountain passes.
But as you know, most recently, my friend Kimberly and I broke the world record for running a marathon with a wheelchair. It was only the third time Kimberley (who is in a wheelchair) and I joined a marathon together as a duo, and as always, we started the first 10 km too strong, but we pushed ourselves to our limits. Now, we're submitting the proof of our time to the World Guinness Book of Records, and we're excited to see it featured in the 2023 edition.

Q: Can you tell us more about your relationship with Kimberley?
Lotte:Kimberley and I first met four years ago during a To Walk Again Ski vacation. They needed someone to help out as a monitor, so I stepped in. We hit it off on that trip and decided to join the Wins for Life World Run that same year. We've only run together three times, but we were determined to break the old record of 3 hours and 54 minutes – and we did it.
Barcelona was the only city that let us run the marathon with a wheelchair. Places like Berlin and Amsterdam didn't allow it for safety reasons. We actually managed to get a pretty good time in Wuustwezel, finishing in 3 hours and 35 minutes, but the course there isn't officially recognised, so it didn't count towards the world record.
Q: Are you planning to compete in any events in the near future?
Lotte: This summer, I plan to qualify for the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii.
Q: The Ironman World Championship is widely considered one of the most challenging endurance events in the world. Can you tell us a bit about the qualification process?
Lotte: So, if you want to qualify for the Ironman World Championship in Hawaii, you've got to finish a full-distance Ironman race first and meet the specific criteria for your age group. The number of qualifying slots for each age group actually depends on the Ironman event you're participating in.
Usually, it's the top finishers in each age group who get a spot, but sometimes, slots are awarded through a random draw or even the Ironman Foundation's charity program. Just remember, you'll have to register for the World Championship race and pay the entry fee, which can be a bit pricey.
The championship itself takes place every year in Kailua-Kona, and it's no joke. You've got a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a full marathon run of 26.2 miles.
Q: How do you think XTRACT impacted your sports performance during the marathon?
Lotte: I think XTRACT helped maintain my energy levels throughout the race, as I didn't experience any significant performance drop even towards the end. It provided the necessary boost to keep pushing myself, ultimately breaking the world record while pushing a wheelchair.
Normally you have a dip at around the 24th km, but this time, I felt my muscle fatigue much more than my cardio, which I think is a consequence of taking XTRACT.
