Approx. 226 km
The Zalaris Norseman Xtreme takes place every year in Norway on the first Saturday in August. The course is one of the toughest in the world, starting with a swim in the icy waters of the Hardangerfjord, with temperatures as low as 12°C. After the swim, athletes embark on a 180 km bike ride, which includes five mountain passes and over 3.500 m of elevation gain. The bike ride finishes in the town of Austbygde, where athletes begin the final leg of the race, a 42,2 km run that finishes at the top of the Gaustatoppen mountain.Originally organised by five friends, the first edition was held in 2003 and only had 21 participants, but it quickly grew to become a must-do for triathletes around the world.
What makes it unique?
The Zalaris Norseman Xtreme is unique for several reasons. Firstly, it is considered one of the toughest triathlons in the world due to its extreme conditions, which include cold water temperatures, strong currents, steep mountain climbs, and unpredictable weather. The race takes athletes through some of Norway's most stunning landscapes, including fjords, mountains, and valleys, making it an unforgettable experience. It also has a unique format. Unlike other triathlons, there is no fixed route, and athletes must navigate their way to the finish line, making it a true test of endurance, navigation, and strategy. Athletes also get help from support crews, who provide them with food, water, and assistance throughout the race.
Finally, the Zalaris Norseman Xtreme has a unique and intimate atmosphere, with only 250 athletes allowed to compete each year. This creates a close-knit community of athletes, organisers, and volunteers. It’s not just an event but a journey that challenges athletes mentally and physically, enabling them to connect with the natural world and their fellow competitors.
